Winter U.P.Golf on Snow Shoes in March!

I do believe Dave and I have invented a new winter sport- "Snow Shoe Golf" !

It was one of those end of winter days when the sun was shining, the temperature was rising and the snow was melting. We had gone x-c skiing earlier in the day but we knew by the marginal snow conditions that this would be our last ski of the year. It was so sunny and beautiful outside and now 40 degrees! We live close to a golf course so we decided to invent a snow golf game. We used our regular golf clubs( one of two each), tennis balls( new ones with lots of good pressure ) and our snow shoes on our feet to navigate the still deep snow. We used trees or the hole markers as the point to aim at as they were made of stone and stood up and out of the snow with a little melt all around the bottom for a ball to drop into.

I must admit when we first started you still had to really watch where your ball went as although it stayed up nicely on the snow to hit it, after it landed it sunk right into the 3 foot deep snow. We played a distance of about a par three length for each hole and used a few pine trees with some snowmelt underneath for some clean shots off the grass to tee off. We played 9 holes in about an hour. That was enough exercise after dragging around our over sized snow shoes in the deep snow and digging out your balls each time to make the next shot. But it was really fun to be outside enjoying the fresh air and sunshine at this " in-between seasons" time of year. We had a few spectators that slowed their cars down on the road near the golfcourse to watch as perhaps they had not ever seen golfers on a snow covered golf course at this time of year. In fact when we went out for dinner that night we overheard the people at the next booth talking about how they "saw somebody golfing in the snow". Boy were they surprised when I told them it was us! Now you know how small this town is!

I guess if you love being outside you can always find a fun way to amuse yourself and we even got a little exercise too!! I am not a huge fan of snowshoeing unless you are walking some place you cannot get by car, ski or snowmobile, as it is slow, physically alot of work, and sweaty at times if not dressed correct. I prefer skiing in the snow but I'll take snowshoe golf when skiing is not an option.
